Traveling to different parts of Ireland means that there are necessary visits that must be made. In Western Ireland this must-see spot is the Cliffs of Moher and luckily that was the last and final stop that was made during the Western Ireland weekend excursion.
The Cliffs of Moher are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland. They are about 5 miles long and raise to over 700 feet at their highest point which makes the view from any spot on the cliffs look amazing. Not only are the views of the Atlantic water amazing, however, there is also a great view of the acres of land accompanied with cattle. Also, at the top of the cliffs towards the left side, a small and shallow pool of water can be found.
Due to the cliffs being a tourist destination, there is a visitor’s center that holds a café and information about the flora and fauna at the cliffs. There is a theatre that plays a video throughout the day of the various wildlife species that can be found throughout the year when visiting the Cliffs of Moher. There are also posters with facts on the walls around the theatre so that visitors can read more information on some of the species, one of them being the Atlantic Puffin. Personally, I found it surprising how many different sea animals could be found at the cliffs during the different seasons of the year.
Although they are a beautiful sight to see, the cliffs do hold a lot of danger when visiting them. It is a natural sight so there is erosion near the edge of the cliffs that could fall off even if it looks like a safe part of the land. Also, because the cliffs are so high up, strong winds can accompany the journey to the cliffs. However, because it is a tourist destination, there are safety barriers, a wall, that travels most of the way up the cliffs and gives people the option of walking inside of the wall away from the edge or on the outside of the wall closer to the edge.
As someone who personally hates heights, I’d still highly recommend visiting the Cliffs of Moher. Although visiting on a day with good weather would be ideal, the view from the cliffs is breathtaking no matter what kind of day it is. The only recommendation I would have is to not visit on a bad day if you’re scared of heights because the wind may be a bit forceful.
