When filling out my study abroad application, one of my essays was about Seoul street fashion. I am really interested in the difference between why most Koreans seem to prefer dressing more modestly compared to American fashion. I was hoping to attend the Seoul fashion week 2021 =to meet and socialize with Korean fashionistas. Every year during Seoul fashion week outside of DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) there are usually hundreds of teenagers, influencers, fashionistas, raising photographers to take pictures or just to have fun socializing. This event is much more popular than the actual fashion show taking place inside.
I’ve been looking forward to doing this for ages, I’ve been seeing and saving pictures and videos of it for years now. I anticipated it being different this year due to the pandemic, but I didn’t expect it to be so different. Most of the fashion shows were filmed in private places and were filmed; no one was allowed entry so we didn’t get to see any of that either. When me and my friends were there there was no one else that was actually there for fashion week. I was really sad to see that but I guess that it is the reality of the pandemic. I did take a lot of great pictures, forced my friends to stop at every good view, and bothered them until they had to drag me away. There were also a lot of events going on in the DDP. There were design labs, the cultural museums, and a very gorgeous light show inside and outside of the building. I wanted to meet new people have some very nerdy fashion conversations but I guess I will have to wait for that in a post-pandemic world.
