Oyunbileg Bazar, ’25, is a Psychology major studying at the FIE London this Summer 2023.

My initial reaction when I told my college friends about my choice for studying abroad was, “We’re already studying abroad!” Yes, it’s true, but being an international student and embarking on a study abroad program is exciting and rewarding. It provides a rare chance to experience another culture firsthand, broaden your perspective, and learn priceless skills. However, the journey to studying abroad can be accompanied by its fair share of challenges, particularly regarding visa complications and the necessary preparation. But fear not, I’ll give you the tips I needed when I was preparing for the visa process so that you can be more prepared and confident!

  • Start early, stay informed

The key to a hassle-free visa process is to start early and stay well-informed. It’s better to be over-prepared than under, right? With the excitement of going to another country, we tend to neglect the preparation. Research the visa requirements and application process specific to your chosen destination. Visit the official embassy or consulate website to gather accurate and up-to-date information. Take note of any specific documentation, financial requirements, or health checks needed to complete your application successfully. As international students, we’ve done it once so we can do it again.

  • Compile Required Documentation

Prior to starting the visa application process, make sure you have all the required papers on hand. A valid passport, academic transcripts, acceptance letters from your host institution, proof of financial support, and health insurance coverage are required. To prevent stress at the last minute, make a checklist and acquire these documents well in advance. As for me, I went through the UK visa application process and it was simpler than anticipated, thankfully!

  • Seek Assistance from Your Institution

When navigating the visa procedure, your host institution is a crucial asset. For assistance and support, get in touch with the department allocated for international students or the designated office. They can give you detailed information, explain the visa requirements, and help you with any queries or worries you might have. Keep in mind that they are accustomed to working with visa applications and overseas students. FIE London and my study abroad advisor at Drexel assisted me a lot with any questions I had throughout the process.

  • Double-Check Application Accuracy

I remember I was double-checking everything almost every day till my visa appointment. It’s better to be overprepared than under, right? Verify that all of the data you submit is accurate and complete by checking it again. Any inaccuracies or omissions may cause delays or even visa denials. Attention to detail is crucial; remember, everyone’s trying to help you succeed on your application.

  • Prepare for Visa Interviews

Some countries may require a visa interview as part of the application process. If you’re invited for an interview, don’t stress! It’s an opportunity for the embassy to learn more about you and your study plans. Prepare for the interview by familiarizing yourself with common visa interview questions and practicing your responses. Be confident, and honest, and articulate your genuine interest to study abroad.

Viola! You’ve got the visa game under control! With early preparation, accurate documentation, and a positive attitude, you’ll breeze through the visa process like a pro. Remember, this is just a small step on your grand study abroad adventure. So, pack your bags, fuel your excitement, and let the visa be the key that unlocks the door to your incredible study abroad experience. Bon voyage and enjoy the ride of a lifetime!
