Studying abroad is an exciting adventure that offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture, gain valuable academic experience, and make lifelong memories. I embarked on my journey to the United Kingdom for an exchange program at the University of Bristol, and while it was a remarkable experience, there are a few things I wish I had known beforehand. Here are some valuable lessons I learned during my time in the UK:
Networking is Key from the Start: One of the most crucial aspects of studying abroad is building connections with people from different backgrounds. Unfortunately, I underestimated the importance of the first few weeks. While I was busy studying and applying for internships, I missed out on the opportunity to socialize. People around me were eager to make friends and establish connections, and I regret not taking advantage of this early on. It’s essential to break the ice and join in on social activities to form meaningful friendships. It can be an amazing experience going out to trips with a bigger group. Eventually, I figured out the networking aspect but if you want to make the most of your time, talk to people and do not be shy.

Location Matters: I didn’t thoroughly research the location of my dorm before arriving in the UK. While I knew it was close to the university, I didn’t consider the topography of the area. It turns out my dorm was situated at the bottom of a hill, and my daily commute to the university involved a steep climb. I wish I had been more mindful of the location and taken into account factors like transportation and proximity to essential facilities. When choosing your accommodation, make sure to consider all aspects to avoid any unexpected surprises.
Fashion Sense Varies: Fashion varies from one country to another, and my wardrobe from the United States didn’t quite fit the style in the UK. I realized that I had done a lot of shopping back home, but the fashion sense in the UK was different. To blend in and adapt to the local culture, it’s a good idea to do some shopping in your host country. Not only will you look the part, but you’ll also have a chance to explore local fashion trends and support local businesses.
Book Exchange Program Events Early: Exchange universities often organize various events and activities for international students. I made the mistake of assuming I could book these events after arriving, but by the time I got there, many were already fully booked. I missed out on some exciting opportunities to explore the culture and connect with fellow students. To avoid this, plan ahead and book your exchange program events as soon as possible to secure your spot.
Plan International Travel in Advance: One of the perks of studying abroad is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries. However, I made the error of not planning my trips in advance, which led to visa problems and delays. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to visit other European countries during my exchange. To make the most of your time abroad, plan your international travels well in advance, research visa requirements, and stay organized to ensure you don’t miss out on these fantastic experiences.
Studying abroad is a remarkable experience, but it comes with its own set of challenges and lessons. By learning from my experiences, I hope that future exchange students will be better prepared and make the most of their time abroad. Embrace the opportunity to connect with others, explore your host country, and plan your adventures meticulously to ensure a fulfilling and enriching study abroad experience.
