To make our exchange experience a lot more authentically American, 6 of my friends and I decided to go on a 5-day long road trip. In Hong Kong, there’s no such thing as a road trip really. It’s so tiny that you can get to the other side of the city in less than 2 hours, so this was definitely something new. Our road trip was headed towards Canada and then planned to go around Lake Erie and through Pennsylvania.
Our trip kicked off in Allenstown, Pennsylvania – a town that legit felt like some of the backdrops of different American TV shows like the picket fences, quaint streets – the whole nine yards. It was mind-blowing to see that people actually live like that in real life.
After having lunch there we went up towards Ithaca and Syracuse in Upstate New York. We were chasing the Finger Lakes, but daylight savings had other plans. We then rerouted straight to Syracuse to fill up on gas and did a final stretch of driving for the day to Niagara Falls where we spent our first night.
Our Airbnb was really huge and close to the main area of Niagara Falls – three big bedrooms, a living space and all the chill we needed. The night took us to Clifton Hill, where the neon lights made us feel like we were in an ’80s or ’90s amusement park. The next morning we went to the Falls which was surprisingly not cold and this was my second time seeing it and it still amazed me.
On to Toronto, we spent two nights in the city that’s a mashup of cultures and temperatures cold enough to freeze your breath. We strolled downtown and took a ferry to Toronto Island where we saw the sunset there. It was surprising to see people actually living there because there really isn’t anything at all. We ended the night hopping around Ossington Avenue known for its restaurants and bars which was a 10-minute walk from our place.
