Being a history and culture lover, Edinburgh has always had a particular appeal for me. This city appears to whisper stories of the past from its cobbled streets to the magnificent Edinburgh Castle. I just took a trip to discover the best of Edinburgh, and this is a list of the top discoveries I made that should definitely be on every traveler’s itinerary.
1. Take in the splendor of Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle is more than just a stronghold; perched atop an extinct volcanic rock, it is the city’s emblem. I lost hours looking about the old halls, examining the Crown Jewels, and taking in the expansive city vistas. A thrilling experience, the One O’Clock Gun tradition dates back to 1861!
2. Take a stroll along Royal Mile
The Royal Mile, which runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, is the busy center of Old Town. I liked the number of stores offering Scottish mementos, the ancient architecture, and the energetic street performers. A stroll down each alleyway off the main road revealed a secluded garden or hidden courtyard, creating a charming experience.
3. Whiskey tasting
Scotland is known for its whiskey, and there are many opportunities to try the national beverage in Edinburgh. I went to a few of the city’s classic pubs and a specialty whisky bar, where I was able to learn about and sample the many flavors and locales. It was about comprehending a major aspect of Scottish culture, not just drinking.
5. Arthur’s Seat Hike
I accepted the challenge to hike Arthur’s Seat for its amazing vistas of Edinburgh. It’s a fairly straightforward trek, and when I got to the top, I could see the city, the sea, and the surrounding countryside in all directions. It was the ideal location for a scenic picnic!
6. Calton Hill sunset
We found ourselves atop Calton Hill as the day was coming to an end, surrounded by well-known monuments and memorials. The sky turned pink and orange as the sun sank, creating a striking backdrop for the downtown skyline. This peaceful location provided a chance for reflection as well as a breathtaking view of Edinburgh.
