So, I’ve been living in Philadelphia for a little while now as an exchange student, and let me tell you—one of the best parts about being here is all the new food I get to try. I’m from Europe, and while I love my home food, I was super excited to dive into American food chains.
Spoiler: I’m obsessed with some of them now!
Here’s my rundown of the most iconic places I’ve tried so far and how they’re slowly ruining my self-control (but it’s fine, I’m thriving).
Insomnia Cookies—Yes!
I had heard people mention Insomnia Cookies before, but I didn’t think much of it. “Cookies? Cool, but how good can they be?” I was so wrong. These cookies are warm, gooey, and just… heavenly. The first time I had them, I literally had to stop myself from ordering more because I was on the verge of devouring a whole box in one sitting. I’m not even embarrassed—it’s that good. Late-night study sessions are now my excuse to get a couple (or five).
Chick-fil-A—All About the Sauce
Chick-fil-A? Oh yes. I finally understand the hype. The chicken is good, but honestly, the sauce is what makes it. Chick-fil-A sauce is an actual game-changer. I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s like this magical, tangy, sweet, BBQ-y concoction, and I put it on everything. My flatmates and I literally have a bottle of it in our fridge.
Chipotle—My Favorite So Far
If I had to pick a favorite chain right now, it’s probably Chipotle. I’m obsessed with their burrito bowls. You can customize everything, so it’s like a build-your-own dream meal. I love spicy food, and the salsas here hit the spot. Also, guac? Yes, please. Chipotle is basically my go-to when I need something filling but still kind of healthy-ish (depending on how much cheese I let them pile on).
Buffalo Pizza—Where Have You Been All My Life?
I tried buffalo pizza at Ed’s on Lancaster Ave, and while it’s not the traditional Italian pizza you’d think of at first, buffalo sauce is now one of my favorite pizza toppings in the US. It’s basically a pizza with spicy buffalo sauce and chicken on top, and I didn’t know I needed this in my life until I tried it. 10/10, would recommend to anyone who loves pizza with a little kick.
Dunkin’ Donuts—A Daily Ritual
I’m honestly at Dunkin’ way too often. I never thought I’d get into donuts so much, but here I am, grabbing one almost every day. It’s dangerous to live near a Dunkin’. Their iced coffee? Good, I’m not a huge fan, but I still go for the donuts. The Munchkins are my favorite, and it’s way too easy to justify popping in for “just a quick snack.”
The Coffee Situation—Still Not My Thing
Okay, so here’s the thing: American coffee culture is just… not my jam. I’ve tried coffee from all these places—Dunkin’, Starbucks, and a few others—but I can’t get into it. Maybe it’s because I’m used to European coffee, which is a lot stronger and smaller. American coffee feels like it’s watered down, and I miss my espresso. But hey, the food definitely makes up for it!
Philly has been treating me well so far, and I can’t wait to keep trying new places. Stay tuned for more food discoveries! 🍕
