Nestled along the River Nidd in North Yorkshire, Knaresborough is a charming market town filled with history, natural beauty, and quaint streets perfect for wandering. It is just a 40 minute train ride from Leeds, making it an easy getaway. Having never taken a trip alone, I decided to try something new and travel solo. I was a bit worried about not having anyone to share responsibilities or decisions with. It can feel overwhelming in situations where you need help, such as navigating transport or managing unforeseen changes in plans. Certain experiences like dining alone or experiencing a stunning view without a companion to share it with can also feel lonely. As it was a short trip and in a safe area, I took the risk and hopped on a train to Knaresborough.
I started by going to Mother Shipton’s Cave, which is one of England’s oldest tourist attractions and tied to the legend of the famous prophetess. The cave is situated near a natural spring and offers a beautiful riverside walk along the Nidd. From there, I wandered the town’s medieval streets filled with local shops, tearooms, and hidden courtyards. I headed towards the Knaresborough Castle that offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside. As I stood alone overlooking Knaresborough, I reflected on all that I had seen in my short time abroad and managed to do. I felt very proud of myself for how independent I had become and chasing experiences I had only dreamed of before. I treated myself for this by going to a bakery and buying myself a fruit tart before catching the train home 🙂

After my trip, I realized that having every decision in your hands does not have to be overwhelming and can give you freedom instead. There is no need to compromise on where to go, what to see, or when to take a break. You can meander through narrow streets, visit any attraction that piques your interest, and linger in a cozy café for as long as you like. It all depends on how you look at things.
