Carl Huebner: Schnitzel-Fritten-Werkstadt

The other day a local friend of mine told me about a famous schnitzel restaurant. It was only a few minutes away from campus in Bochum so I figured why not give it a shot. The restaurant “Schnitzel-Fritten-Werkstadt” is known for their wide and crazy variety of schnitzel. They offer over 150 different types of schnitzel ranging from your traditional wiener schnitzel or jäger schnitzel, to things a bit crazier like nutella schnitzel and if they don’t have what you want on the menu, they will special make it. All of the schnitzel is hand made fresh on the spot and you can really taste the difference.

I decided to get the “Kino-Feuerschnitzel” and my friend got the simple Jägerschnitzel. One thing I noticed about Germany prior to this is that most of the food here that they call spicy really is not spicy, which has been a disappointment because I really enjoy spicy foods. The Kino-Feuerschnitzel was a breaded schnitzel topped with “fire sauce”, jalapeños, nachos, and cheese. This is far from a traditional german schnitzel, but it sounded good and I hoped to get a little spice. Well, I sure got what I wanted. Either my taste buds just aren’t used to spicy foods anymore, or this thing was spicier than anything I’ve had in a long time. By the time I was half way through my nose was running and I’m pretty sure I was starting to sweat. Now I understand why they topped it with nachos, you needed something to cool your mouth after each bite. Nonetheless, it was still very good and exactly what I was looking for.

The Jägerschnitzel here was also much better than the last place we visited. I think mainly because the schnitzel was freshly cooked. If you are not feeling to adventurous, this is a great one to try. But I was highly recommend trying something that sounds crazy that you can’t get anywhere else when visiting Schnitzel-Fritten-Werkstadt.
